Precipitation Discussion

OVERVIEW: There continues to be significant improvement in the precipitation department week to week, and the US drought monitor (photo toward the bottom of this outlook) is reflecting that. Aside from a small area of Berks and Franklin Counties in PA, the southern two-thirds of Delaware, and a portion of coastal New Jersey where a moderate drought still exits, the remainder of the area is currently without a drought designation. Recent surplus of rainfall through much of August and to begin September greatly impacted the drought situation. The monthly projection for September however is maintained for near to slightly below average (0.0″ to -1.0″) precipitation for the month as a whole. October projections were also maintained this week for slightly below average (-0.5″ to -1.0″) precipitation for the month as a whole, and below average snowfall or none at all… but October snowfall isn’t common for most of the area. November trends were added this week, but is outside our 5-6 week long range purview.

Shorter term, after a rather wet stretch in August and a stormy start to September, a much quieter pattern has taken shape recently, allowing most areas to return to near average precipitation month to date. A cold front moves through Thursday afternoon and evening, but without much fanfare, and limited precipitation. Models are a quite a bit more enthused with the next front expected Sunday with showers and steadier periods of rain. The front may linger in the vicinity early next week and bring additional showers, but not all models agree on that idea presently. Most aggressive is the GFS, which suggests a showers threat through midweek.

September precipitation projections were maintained this week for a near to slightly below average (0.0″ to -1.0″) departure from average for the month as a whole. October projections were also maintained for slightly below average (-0.5″ to -1.0″) precipitation and below average snow in accordance with longer term climate models and global observation trends.

Breakdown of precipitation departures from normal over the next several weeks:

September 20th – September 26th: Above average

September 27th – October 3rd: Near to slightly below average

October 4th – October 10th: Near to slightly below average

October 11th – October 17th: Near to slightly below average

October 18th – October 24th: Near to slightly below average

October 25th – October 31st: Near average

A cold front approaches the region Thursday, and a few showers and perhaps thunderstorms are likely to precede it, especially in the interior in portions of Central PA and Northeast PA.


A cold front is expected to move through Sunday with more rain than its predecessor front, and model uncertainties exist with how long showers linger, perhaps into early next week.Ā 

Pattern Discussion

OVERVIEW:  Our projection for September was slightly adjusted this week to a near average (-1.0°F to +1.0°F) temperature departure for the month as a whole. This change is largely due to the expectation of slightly below to below average stretches, most notably between September 19th-23rd. October projections were maintained this week for a near average (-1.0°F to +1.0°F) temperature departure using long term climate guidance and global observation trends.

  • Seasonal changes are going to be become more noticeable in the weeks ahead as we continue to lower average highs/lows, and that downward process accelerates from this point forward to about a 3.0°F drop per week. The extreme heat is likely behind us, but there will still be some warmer days yet that reach into the 80s over the next couple of days. Climate models have continued to suggest an up-and-down temperature pattern in October, which balances any slightly below and slightly above periods to near average.

  • The Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) is currently in the Circle of Death (COD) or NULL phase, and is expected to venture into a weak phase 8 signal over the weekend, then quickly into a weak phase 1 signal early next week before collapsing back into the COD later in the week. Hurricane activity should remain limited at best with a strong El NiƱo increasing Atlantic shear despite reaching the peak of Atlantic hurricane season September 10th. In fact, as of today, this is the longest we’ve gone without an Atlantic Basin hurricane in since 1966 in the modern satellite era, which is pretty remarkable.

  • A composite average of the SST departures in the ENSO regions places it in moderate to strong El NiƱo territory currently. From west to east across the Pacific, the NiƱo 4 (west-central Pacific) is currently the “coolest” region at +1.1°C, whereas the NiƱo 3.4 region (east-central Pacific) is currently at +3.0°C. The eastern regions of NiƱo 3 (east-central Pacific) is currently +3.8°C, and NiƱo 1+2 region (near the Peruvian coast) is at an astounding +5.0°C as of September 14th. The current El NiƱo Summer is likely to be followed by a near-record strong El NiƱo Fall, and is currently East-based.

Average high temperatures are currently in the 75-79°F range from north to south across our coverage region, which is about 2°F lower than at this point last week. The drop off in temperatures will now accelerate downward from this point forward to about a 3°F per week drop. Any above or below average stretches listed in the outlook will be relative to seasonal norms at that time, and it is important to note that cooler/warmer periods will be relative to the time of year we are talking about. For example, the below average temperatures listed for the September 21st-23rd period features highs in the upper 60s to lower 70s, coming at a time when average highs are in the middle 70s. Use the average highs/lows chart below providing transparency for what average temperatures are expected to be at each corresponding location through November 1st.

October projections were maintained this week for a near average (-1.0°F to +1.0°F) temperature departure using long term climate guidance and global observation trends.

Average temperatures at our major climates stations across the region are shown over the next 6 weeks; average temps will drop at a much faster rate beyond the Autumnal equinox.

Warmer than average temperatures will be common just past mid-month, where perhaps the last 80s of the year will be seen… then cooler than average temperatures settle in thereafter.
