Rain and snow to affect the Thanksgiving holiday
Last updated: 4:55 PM Tuesday November 26th, 2024
Synoptic Overview:
Low pressure will move from the Tennessee Valley late Wednesday, and will move to a position over the Delmarva at about noon on Thursday. Rain and snow will overspread the region after midnight Wednesday night (early Thursday) and precipitation will likely continue through the majority of the afternoon on Thursday. Low pressure moves to just off the SE New England coast Thursday night and continues northeast from there. A trough with breezy conditions and much colder temperatures will follow this system beginning on Friday.Â
Impacts and Timing: Impact level for this event is nuisance to minor in areas expected to see accumulating snowfall, and minor in areas expecting mostly rain.
Timing is generalized for the region, but expect precipitation regardless of precipitation type to overspread the region from SW-NE near or just after midnight Wednesday night (early Thursday morning) and continue through late Thursday afternoon. Snow will occur in the northern interior locations, most notably across the higher terrain of North Central and Northeast PA. Snow will transition to rain in those areas, beginning first in the lower elevations, and occurring Thursday morning or early afternoon in the highest elevations, where the most snow accumulation is expected. Elsewhere farther south, rain is expected from start to finish as temperatures are likely to be too warm to support snow. Precipitation regardless of type ends late afternoon Thursday SW-NE. Â
Snow impacts: Nuisance to minor. Highest totals in areas of elevation. Snow will be of the wetter variety. Snow ratios will be between 6:1 and 8:1 for this eventÂ
Ice impacts: None expected
Rain impacts: Minor; highest in area B in the accompanying map below, and generally between 0.50-0.75" of total rainfall or liquid equivalent, which includes both rain plus melted snow
Wind impacts: None notable during the system itself; cold air advection wind will follow Thursday evening W 15-25mph, and will resume Friday afternoon as the trough settles in
Travel disruptions: Minimal for most, and the highest chances for disrupted travel will be found Thursday morning mainly in the higher elevations
Power outage concerns: Minimal and spotty
School cancellations/delays: N/A since this is a holiday break period and schools will be unaffected
